A key participant in the April 5th Movement of 1976, and one of the main advisors to China's reform and opening up in the 1980s, he was the proposer of the strategic policies of "comprehensive opening up of China's coastal areas, establishment of high-tech development zones, and construction of the Eurasian Land Bridge," and the author of the "Report on an Investigation of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone." He was also a key participant in the "Academic Symposium for Young and Middle-aged Economic Scientists" (also known as the Moganshan Conference) in 1984, through which he made a series of important contributions during the historical period of China's reform and opening up in the 1970s and 1980s.

In August 1980, at the first National Science Policy Conference held in Taihu Lake, Wang Qishan, Zhu Jiaming, and Chen Ping were among the young advisors.
After the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989, Chen Ping went into business. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he engaged in business in mainland China, the China-Myanmar border region, the former Soviet Union and later Russia, Eastern European countries, West Germany and later Germany, the United States, and Hong Kong. His business covered a wide range of fields, including clothing wholesale, materials trading, real estate, financial services, and high-tech industries.
